Can you feel it?

There is something spectacular about to happen.

It’s called Winter!!

(Oh and a big, juicy planetary shift this week. The planets are about to throw down some epic awesomeness and you gotta be in it to win it!)

Let me share with you my love of winter… this is coming from a former summer-chasing, winter-loathing Canadian

In the past 6 years, I have chosen to embrace what the Danish call “Hygge”. It’s too hard to explain the pronunciation so just roll with me here… this is all about embracing and enjoying what Winter brings to us.

Getting amongst the coziness, the community events, the warming practices of baking bread, cuddling in woolly knitted jumpers, eating hot nourishing dinners, drinking wine with friends and *ahem* practicing yoga in a lovely warm, cocoon-like studio with a beautiful community of people.

Winter is all about nourishing yourself and restoring your body and nervous system – hibernating if you will.

A positive mind through meditation and being proactive with yoga and other exercise are what’s going to get you through the next few chilly months.

To help you get into the spirit of Winter and keep the chill away as you leave any of my classes you can enjoy a cup of warm mulled cider after Savasana! If you have to run to work, bring a takeaway mug from home with you.

I’ve shared the recipe with you all here too.

After a particularly stressful week working, and juggling the kids at childcare I found myself in the arms of comfort food. Along with my diet, my motivation and training went out the window.

Returning to training the following week, my runs were really sluggish, my improvement had back-tracked significantly and I felt terrible. I thought ‘enough is enough’, realising that I could not do everything on my own I decided to take advantage of the Working In member discounts from The Cooks Grocer and follow Nard’s breakfast meal plans.

The member discount entitles you to ‘3 meals for 2′, delivered on either a Wednesday or Saturday. My delivery option came before 9am which was great as I didn’t have to wait around all day or worry about it sitting outside for me to come home.

The meals come with all the ingredients packaged with the recipe in smart brown paper bags, so you just need to pull a meal bag out of the fridge and you are ready to go. The meals are delicious and I have cooked with ingredients I have never used before. I like to think of myself as a bit of a foodie, but all my time goes into cooking and preparing meal plans for the kids.

What I love about The Cooks Grocer is that they are really simple to prepare and cook but the ingredients and recipes are on a completely new master chef level of taste. My husband Andy has said to me after each meal ‘I know I always say this, but this really is the best meal I’ve ever had’.

There is so much variety and I am also not wasting any food – I get to try all these new ingredients with fresh herbs without any wastage as you are given the exact amount you need. The value for money is really outstanding – you would spend a fortune buying the same quality ingredients from a fresh food market.

Even though I am still preparing separate meals for the kids (they are still a bit too young to appreciate it), they only take about 20 mins or so to cook and prepare once they are in bed. The portion sizes are really good – they are really filling (and sustaining), and they are under about 400 calories so I know I am eating well. When Andy is not around, I just eat his portion for lunch the next day!!

After 2 weeks of my reformed diet, I have managed to shave 16 seconds off my 10km pace and my clothes seem to fit better. I am too scared to weigh myself – I am saving that for after the half marathon in July!

Kelly

My tip of the day for improving your wellbeing, is to try and spend 5 every day minutes in meditation.

Now, the usual response when I talk about meditation, is for people to say ‘i’ve tried it, I just can’t do it, my mind is too busy!’ That’s because people have the wrong idea about what meditation is.

Meditation is not a magic technique that if you just learn the right one, attend the right course, or focus hard enough, is suddenly going to make your brain go silent. Thoughts are a part of the meditation process. The difference is that you are observing those thoughts, rather than being lost in them. So… when you’re thinking during your meditation practice, you’re not doing anything wrong!!!

Meditation is simply the practice of sitting, breathing and becoming aware of the present moment. Observing everything that is happening inside and around you, in a relaxed, non-judgemental fashion.

But just sitting, breathing and observing all those thoughts can be overwhelming initially, so it is helpful to give the mind a hook. Something to focus on. And by giving the mind a task, we create a gateway for stillness to arise around that gentle point of focus. There are a myriad of different ‘hooks’ to try – apps, dvds, CDs, YouTube videos, classes and courses. My recommendation is to try out a couple and see what resonates for you. My other recommendation is to start small – 5 minutes a day is all you need to do initially. Once you’re in the routine of meditating daily then you can build on the time if you like. However, there really is no need. Spending even 5 minutes per day sitting, breathing and observing will do your health and wellbeing the world of good.

As part of my run coaching, I always encourage runners to carry some form of identity with them when they go running. Surprisingly, the majority of runners head out the door with no ID on them at all.

A fabulous solution is a simple wristband that you can easily slip on your wrist as you head off. A company called Road ID produces some amazing wristbands – you build your wristband online – choose your style, colour, add a funky badge, personalise your metal tag with all your emergency contacts and add any medical conditions.

This is a fantastic solution and is a must for ALL athletes – runners, cyclists, swimmers, etc.

Highly recommended – check out www.roadid.com.
