Rachel has brought her family together through food, exercise and living a healthier life. A great message Rachel, thank you : )

My family has been on an amazing journey over the past 6 months.

The journey is all about our lifestyle, our food, our exercise and how they bring us together. Being the mum of two children with additional needs (visually impaired and immune deficiency), I am always on the lookout for terrific food that can be used at any time of day. Food that everyone loves and that is easy and healthy.

Recently I was given a recipe for a Zucchini, Fennel and Sweet Potato fritter.

Cooking this first as an easy and nutritious dinner, it has now become a favourite. It is gluten and dairy free which works with my son’s coeliac disease and is basically just yum! We cook up a big batch now and freeze them, they are then eaten at any time – planning on adding bacon in the next batch as well. My daughter regularly asks for them for breakfast! It is wonderful to see them eating such terrific food.

Our member this week, Donna Westlake, has been immersing herself in the Working-IN program, hook, line and sinker! Already a convert to Alethea’s yoga practice, she has trained with both Beauty of Exercise and Active Lifestyles and is loving the whole food recipes and guidance from Nadia Felsch. Donna even attended the Longevity Workshop last weekend – this lady is on a mission!! Go for it Donna…

My experiences with yoga have always been wonderful but my participation had been very sporadic until I discovered Alethea’s wonderful studio in Collaroy. I love that the studio is close to home and that Alethea has developed a real sense of community around it by offering special workshops and events. I’ve become quite addicted! When the Working-IN program started up I was keen to get involved to give me some extra motivation to keep working out and eat well.

Six weeks into the Program and I’m loving it. I’ve been to some personal training sessions at Active Lifestyle, which have been great and I intend to join in with some running as well. I’m particularly embracing the nutritional aspect of the program. I was part way there with more wholesome eating but now I’m thoroughly enjoying creating the fabulous food suggested by the coaches and Nadia. I’ve completely changed the way I shop, have re-vamped my pantry and approach to eating and feeling wonderful as a result.

I’m probably one of the ‘older’ participants in the program but I see it as more important than ever to have a really strong foundation to stay vital and ward off those nasties that can come with middle age. After listening to Nevin’s Longevity Workshop on the weekend, I’m hoping to be ‘downward dogging’ for a long time to come!

Thank you and well done to our coaches and nutritionist!!!

Fantastic post this week from the very passionate Robyn de Beer. This is what Working-IN is all about!! We love you too…

I’m Robyn, I’m 35 and I have three kids. I live on the Northern Beaches and I’m a full time mum. I also work part-time from home as a blogger. My passions in life are taking photos and long walks on the beach. I also enjoy cooking with my thermomix, although cooking everyday for a busy household is not really something I’m passionate about – yet.

Fitness is always something I’ve enjoyed, but I’ve never seemed to find the right balance with it. I’ve either gone for it all guns blazing and then hit a wall and stopped, or I’ve struggled to find the enthusiasm and time. I’ve pretty much been the same with it comes to healthy eating too.

My ‘baby’ is about to turn three at the end of this month and I still haven’t managed to keep off the weight that I gained during my last pregnancy. Since she was born, my weight has yo-yoed up and down more times than I can count, and currently I am sitting at the heaviest I have ever been. I’m terrified that my weight is going to keep on creeping up if I don’t do something about it now.

I joined the Working-IN program at the beginning of May because I really liked the way that it offered more than one element of ‘well-being’. The program focused not only on losing weight but also on all elements of fitness as well as nutrition, yoga and mindfulness.

I’ve tried to do one class every day of the week since I started, and I’ve been amazed by not only how much I’ve enjoyed it, but how easy it has been to achieve. I’m learning to run outside, I’ve done yoga, spinning, strength, flexibly, breathing techniques, mindfulness and core work. It’s fantastic and impossible to get bored.

I love that the classes are small and there are a variety of trainers, each brining their own individual advice and expertise. I’ve felt like every session has been tailor made to suit my body and my ability.

The very best part about the program is the enthusiasm and back up that comes from Debbie and the Working-IN community. The Facebook page is also a place where all members get together and cheer each other on as well as swap stories and share tips. It’s an amazing support. I can easily see this becoming a life long program to follow.

The Working-IN program also offers nutritional advice to go alongside your fitness and I’ve found these invaluable. Not just to me but to my family too. I really want to give my kids the best nutrition start in life so that they really understand what goes into their tummies. Using the weekly shopping lists and meal plans have made that so much easier. It’s still early days for us on this but I am determined to master the whole package.

At just three weeks into my Working-IN journey and I feel like I have only just scratched the surface. There is so much more to learn and discover about keeping my family and I permanently fit and healthy. So far I feel fantastic and would highly recommend it to anyone.

I have loved stepping onto my mat at Alethea’s studio to practice yoga for the past year. Yoga has been an amazing way for me to connect with my mind and my body.

The Working-In program is an excellent opportunity to challenge and motivate myself as part of a community to develop a lasting healthy lifestyle beyond my yoga practice.

I love the idea that it is encompassing health and fitness in a wholistic way; looking after strength, cardio, stretching, meditation and nutrition.

My biggest challenge will be to start incorporating running into my routine, but already the other members in the program have been so encouraging and welcoming.

As a proud local, it also makes me happy to be part of something in our own neighborhood. And I am loving the discount and deals at places like SCOOP and Stay Grounded!

Debbie spoke to Peita – one of her lovely Beauty of Exercise members – about the Working-IN program and how’s it’s benefiting her health and wellbeing…

1. Feeling good from the inside out

Working-IN to me means looking after your all of your needs for wellbeing, most of us have the physical training side working well but could use a little help with feeling good from the inside out with training for our minds, relaxation and improving our nutrition and wellness. Working-IN offers balance with so many different classes to choose from and helpful guidance from a team of experts.

2. Spending time on myself and nurturing my body with yoga

Alongside my regular running training with Debbie at Beauty of Exercise I was really keen to try a yoga class with Alethea at The Wellbeing Studio. I hadn’t been to a yoga class for a while and really missed how good it makes your body and mind feel. The studio is a relaxing, calm environment and suitable for all levels. Alethea demonstrates easy and more challenging versions of each pose and we did some amazing hip and gluteal stretches – a must for all the runners out there! Alethea explained the benefits of yoga include purging toxins from the body and centring yourself and your breathing really assists more strenuous training. Spending an hour or so on yourself and treating your body to some nurturing is something I will really look forward to every week!

3. Being inspired by the amazing selection of wholefoods at Scoop

Those who know me are aware I am a really keen cook and mad foodie so I was really excited to pop into Scoop Wholefoods in Mona Vale, especially after I saw that nut butter machine on the Week 1 video! The shop smells amazing and has every health food item you could need beautifully arranged in tubs so you help yourself to paper bags, scoop out as little or as much as you need of organic, fresh nuts, seeds, grains, flours and even delectable chocolates, jot the product code on the bag and take them to the register to be weighed. As a Working-IN member you are entitled to a 10% discount too! I picked up some of my favourites such as coconut flakes, almond meal and peanut butter and also some Coconut Kefir to try – it’s delicious!

4. Guidance and advice on both training AND nutrition

The most valuable part of the program for me is the continued guidance and advice in working on areas of my training and nutrition I would like to improve. The focus on food as fuel and getting as many nutrients out of what I am eating is really important to me to stay well, fuel my training and hopefully lose some more weight so I am looking forward to more recipes, advice on good food for runners and tips to feel great. I am hoping to achieve more balance between physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing, working on positive thinking whilst running and making time for yoga, stretching and meditation on a weekly basis.

We asked Beauty of Exercise member, Inger Torres DeOliviera, what the Working-IN program means to her:

I live locally in Narrabeen, so having access to additional fitness classes on my doorstep is a huge plus. I love that there are an assortment of different fitness classes at different times – so a much bigger and more varied timetable. This provides me with the opportunity to try new sessions (i.e. yoga) and challenge myself in other areas. I have 2 small children, so it’s a big plus that kids are welcome at no extra cost.

I’m really looking forward to the nutritional guidance during the course of the 10-week program. Having this inspiration is a huge help, especially leading into the darker, colder months.

This program really benefits the community – bringing 3 fitness professionals together, sharing their skills, collaborating with community partners about nutrition, benefiting from amazing partner discounts – it is great value for money! My husband is also looking at joining the gym on a regular basis.
